Have you ever seen a Mitten? Have you ever heard one? I'm guessing not!! So who are they...?

So let's start with the basics. There are six different types of Mitten and each type has their own traits and subtypes and can be recognised by their Glimmer. What's a Glimmer I hear you say? Don't worry, all will be explained in time...

The secret to a Mittens power is clockwork (although eating cake will see them through if they need an energy boost!). When a Mitten is born it is presented with a key that it will treasure always. Each key is unique to a Mitten and should only be used by the true Mitten owner. In real emergencies other keys can be used but Mittens do not like to as it makes them feel quite unpleasant and squirmy.
Mittens cannot use their keys themselves and will always ask another Mitten to help them, usually a good friend or a family member as it is a private matter for a Mitten. They call it 'Minding' and can be rather shy and anxious about the whole process. Most Mittens need Minding every few days and this is why you will hardly ever find a Mitten on its own. To be alone is to run the risk of Stopping, which is a terrible thing to happen to a Mitten! You will always find them in small groups even when travelling.

Mitten Glimmer
Every Mitten has a Glimmer - this is a symbol of their type and personality. They are born with their Glimmer symbol and most will never change. If a Mitten is very determined they could change types but it takes many years and special powers. Most Mittens are very happy with their Glimmer and they always display it with pride. This little Mitten has a Star which makes him a proud Sky Mitten. |
Making friends with a Mitten can take time and dedication. They are very shy and nervous at first. But gentleness, kindness and a chocolate biscuit now and again can work wonders. Once a Mitten has made friends they will always be there for each other.
Mittenish
Mittens speak 'Mittenish' which is their own special language. It has far fewer words than most human languages but this does certainly not limit their conversations. Most words can be combined with feelings to give many different meanings, and Mittens love to talk!! Their ears are very expressive and how high a Mitten holds his ears is a good indication of his happiness.
Mitten Spark
Mittens are magical little creatures and each Mitten has a 'Mitten Spark'. This is an extra burst of energy that can appear if the Mitten is very excited and happy about something. Book Mittens are particularly interested in this and can spend years studying and honing their skills. Beware though, the Mitten Spark is a powerful thing and can cause all manner of disruption. If your TV or radio keeps playing up there may well be a Mitten party going on close by somewhere! |
